WNBA Toronto, Temporary Brand Identity

With Toronto set to welcome its first-ever WNBA expansion team, a strong temporary brand identity was essential to build excitement and establish an early presence. The system needed to balance sophistication and athleticism, aligning with the WNBA’s visual language while resonating with Toronto’s passionate basketball culture.

Working with the Kilmer Group and the WNBA, I developed a comprehensive visual identity system, including a custom logo, color palette, typography, and visual hierarchy. This ensured consistency across digital, print, merchandise, and event branding. I also designed community activation materials and launch event assets, shaping the team’s introduction to the market.

By combining strategic design with Toronto’s sports DNA, the brand identity set the stage for the team’s long-term visual and cultural impact.

CREATIVE APPROACH

Inspired by Toronto’s dynamic sports culture and the WNBA’s progressive identity, I designed a modern and versatile brand system that balanced elegance with athleticism. The visual identity featured a sleek emblem, a bold yet adaptable typography system, and a color palette that reflected the city’s energy while maintaining harmony with the WNBA’s established brand. This ensured consistency across print, digital, and event applications, creating a strong foundation for the team’s introduction to the market.

RESULTS & IMPACT

The launch event garnered significant attention, with attendance from dignitaries such as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, rapper Drake, and NBA stars Scottie Barnes and Kyle Lowry. The temporary brand identity played a pivotal role in generating buzz and setting the stage for the team’s official branding and future community engagement.
